Two photo projects
Early this afternoon, I photographed a rally at Queen’s Park calling on the provincial government to remediate mercury contamination around Grassy Narrows which they authorized over fifty years ago.
Later, I took some portraits of a past professor of mine.
The responsibility to protect versus humanitarian intervention
In Massey College’s Upper Library today, Ramesh Thakur gave an interesting presentation on changing international ideas about the use of military force in response to human rights violations, emphasizing the distinction between the concept of humanitarian intervention and the idea of the responsibility to protect (R2P).
I got photos of the event.
During the question and answer period Jeffrey Goldberg’s article on Obama’s foreign policy came up – specifically, the comment to Samantha Power: “Samantha, enough, I’ve already read your book”.
Massey Grand Rounds 2016
This year’s Massey Grand Round events marked the 10th anniversary of the symposium and was on the topic of big data and personalized medicine.
I got a set of photos of all the panels and speakers, including Aubie Angel, Hugh Segal, Trevor Young, Arvind Gupta, Stephen Scherer, Nancy Reid, Michael Schull, Khai Truing, Michael Brudno, and Joseph Geraci.
Carillon portraits
First thing this morning I got some photos of Massey College Junior Fellow Elisa Tersigni with the University of Toronto’s carillon.
She needs them for a forthcoming performance on Parliament hill, but they are also a nice addition to my Massey Portrait Project.
2016 Massey Winter Ball
I photographed the Winter Ball festivities at Massey. This year it was organized by Clara Steinhagen and Frank Leenders.
Robbie Burns Night 2015
I got photos at this year’s Robbie Burns celebration at Massey College.
Kensington Market winter solstice celebration
I got some photos of this year’s parade. The emphasis is on fire-spinning and the huge sculpture of hands which they burned.
Climate Welcome photos
350Canada.org has organized a four day direct action in Ottawa, calling on the new government of Justin Trudeau to commit to strong climate action before the UNFCCC negotiations in Paris later this month.
I came over to take photos and learn more about how climate activism in Canada is developing.
