LC^3T: Vancouver to Calgary

The return journey feels a bit like repaying student loans – the cost that comes after the benefit, and which is paid with the excitement and enjoyment behind. That said, perhaps I learned something from the trip out, and the return trip will be less straining.

Ottawa does include things to look forward to: friends and a new job, particularly.

In the spring of 2005, I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in International Relations and a general focus in the area of environmental politics. In the fall of 2005, I began reading for an M.Phil in IR at Wadham College, Oxford. Outside school, I am very interested in photography, writing, and the outdoors. I am writing this blog to keep in touch with friends and family around the world, provide a more personal view of graduate student life in Oxford, and pass on some lessons I've learned here.

  1. It is worth noting that the bus left Vancouver with just 12 passengers – far fewer than I saw on average before Christmas.

  2. Following the Langley stop, the bus is very nearly full – just three or four free seats out of 54.

  3. Hopefully they’ll leave around Kamloops, a lot of people take the bus to ski Big White.

  4. Good news Milan !

warmer temperatures today in southern Ontario – it might
be a good idea to ask the driver to step on it as i am not sure how
long these milder winds are to last !

    keep on truckin’ !

  5. We had a silly security check before midnight in Calgary.

They waved everyone through except one elderly man, who they searched for twenty minutes. They peeked into his cigarette package and made him throw away his shaving cream.

A waste of money, and a pointless undermining of dignity, in exchange for no new security.

  6. The purpose of these security checks is not security but the appearance of security. Do they make people feel safer?

  7. Milan, did you happen to speak to this elderly man whom
    they searched ?

  8. Milan, i am sure that you realised that my first comment about
asking the busdriver to hurry up
was a joke, but searching an elderly man riding a bus
is definitely not a laughing matter and i am curious on what basis
the bus authorities decided to carry out such a search on him – i
realise fully that this is none of my business – just curious – i have
a feeling that this man should not have been searched. in the nineties
people traveled by bus – there were no searches
Milan, it is incredible what you have decided to do. spending
a week travelling by bus to visit your family and friends takes much
character and shows that you are a true environmentalist. it is so much
easier just to hop on a plane. i am amazed – you are a Francois Paradis
of the twenty first century. well done !

  9. They are slowly searching people one by one in Winnipeg, since there is still lots of time before the bus.

Show up an hour early and they poke through your baggage; show up two minutes before and they wave you through.
