There are lots of sites out there that present videos in a non-downloadable way, wrapped in flash video players. For instance, there are Megavideo and YouTube. For those running Safari, there is an easy way to download these videos:
- On the page with the video, click ‘Window’ and the ‘Activity.’
- Scroll through the list until you find something plausibly large (at least a few megabytes)
- Select that item and copy it, either with the hotkey or from ‘Edit > Copy.’
- Click ‘Window’ and ‘Downloads’
- Paste the item, with either the menu or the hotkey.
- The file will download to your desktop.
- Add the extension .flv to the file
- They can be played in video players like VideoLAN.
The same trick can be used to grab other forms of embedded media from all sorts of websites, and it’s much easier than digging around in search of temporary internet files.
… or better, if you are using firefox, go grab video download helper
it grabs the *.flv file and converts it to your favourite movie format (i capture it into *.mp4 to load into the iphone)
5 steps can be cut out of your instructions, at least on my version of Safari:
Do steps 1 & 2.
Double click the file.
Do step 8, it even already has the correct extension.
Is there a way of doing this in firefox?
Possibly. You should check if someone has made a Greasemonkey script for it.
