I don’t have a great deal of free time, since my days are mostly being spent volunteering for the Tar Sands Action protest against the Keystone XL pipeline. Still, I would like to see a few unusual and interesting things while I am in the American capital.
Any suggestions for especially good things to see or do? Ideally, things that are a bit unusual and unlikely to be included in my Lonely Planet guide.

I found a couple of things that might interest you :
Visit Grace Church in Georgetown for Coffee Hour every Sunday. Listen to local poets and enjoy free coffee. Washington City Paper named it the best coffee hour in the city.
The National Geographic Society Headquarters is the home to the
National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall. View changing and
permanent exhibitions on a variety of scientific, geographic and
cultural themes. Open Monday to Sat 9-5 and Sundays 10-5.

I am 100% certain I saw you just a while ago at the white house :) How long are you in town for? Some eccentric places that are worth checking out are the O Street Mansion in Dupont, Meridian Hill park for the drum circle/acrobatic yoga/hula hoop dance party on Sunday afternoons/evenings, and Bicycle Space bike rides on Thursday nights (a great way to see the city).

Consider going to the Vietnam Veterans’ War Memorial, either late at night or early in the morning where no one else may be around. I saw it this way escorted by a former vet with a flaming torch. The ceaseless list of names stood out for me. On the lighter sider, there may be a bike ride along the towpath or beyond on the Potomac River in Georgetown.
