Retirement options for a ruined world

Some elderly Japanese people are providing a second late-life alternative for those who will need to endure the coming decades of societal breakdown. Along with “die in the climate wars” they are demonstrating an alternative means of survival for people who society is unwilling to support: Japan’s elderly are lonely and struggling. Some women choose to go to jail instead.

Of course, in a society where every traditional expectation and state function is being undermined by unchecked climate change, prisons probably won’t end up as a very appealing way of maintaining access to shelter and food.
