I am amused and pleased to have played a role in organizing a hiking trip in Vancouver involving Emily; my friend, former classmate, and former flatmate Kai; his friend Verena; and my father. Vicarious social mountain climbing – the last resort of we flatland dwellers.
Actually, the whole thing was great fun, even from 4,808km away.
[Update: 28 Mar 2008] Emily has a post on this.

In the spring of 2005, I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in International Relations and a general focus in the area of environmental politics. In the fall of 2005, I began reading for an M.Phil in IR at Wadham College, Oxford.
Outside school, I am very interested in photography, writing, and the outdoors. I am writing this blog to keep in touch with friends and family around the world, provide a more personal view of graduate student life in Oxford, and pass on some lessons I've learned here.

Great fun! Thank you for orchestrating it, from your thousands of KM’s away. Climbing up Grouse in the snow, in the dark, with wonderful company, is my new favorite thing. :)
It was really great – I was the leader (okay…..I was the slowest, so I had to go first ;-)) but I enjoyed it very much! I hope Emily and I will drink coffee at UBC soon! Your father is probably the best guide for the mountains you can find! And: wonderful hot soup at the end!
I second Emily and Verena – a great Vancouver-esque experience with spectacular views of the city and the wilderness surrounding it!
Thanks, Blobster, for masterminding it and for pulling the organizational strings in the background – Kissinger couldn’t have done it any better!

In the future, if any of your friends are visiting Vancouver, I would be pleased to take them on a hike up Grouse. (We can watch for the UFO’s)
