Another one bites the dust

It's never encouraging to look into your pigeon hole and see a slim envelope from a scholarship committee: in this case, the selection committee for Oxford's Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS):
I regret to tell you that your application was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, due to the large number of applicants we are unable to provide individual feedback on the results.
Those who have applied and not found such a letter in your post, take heart. The ORS is quite a nice scholarship, which converts the fees you pay as an international student to those paid by someone from the UK: a dramatic reduction.

Are you still in the running for any others?

The Chevening is big. The others are relatively modest.

Sorry to hear this. They're hardly giving any ORS awards nowadays. It must be hard for the university to turn down those fat international student fees...

I have to say, I am also disappointed with the scholarship news. You're one of the most accomplished people I know at your age and it seems ridiculous that your merits have been deemed insufficient. What do these people want!? A better GPA, a kidney and some of your liver? If you, of all people, cannot get the scholarship there is little hope for the rest of us mortals.

    Viki,

While I appreciate the vote of confidence, there is indeed much that I am lacking. My extracurriculars aren't great. There was debate back at UBC and there is the strategic studies group here, but that isn't much. I don't have any sports, and I don't have any stunning personal accomplishments in unexpected areas.

All that said, I am keeping fingers crossed for the Chevening: my last shot at substantial funding for next year.

I too am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks. It would mean the difference between at least doubling my student debt and possibly having a shot at paying some of it back. That, in turn, affects how much freedom of manoevre I will have after this program is over.
