Win a print for commenting

As regular readers will already know, next month I have a photography exhibition at Raw Sugar Cafe (692 Somerset, Ottawa). Some kind of an event corresponding to the opening of the show will be arranged, with details to be published here when known.

As a means of encouraging discussion, the following will be in effect for the time between now and the start of the show: anyone who posts a comment on any of my posts will be entered into a draw for a mounted photographic print of mine which I will select. Each comment will have an equal chance of winning, so people who post more will have better odds.

I will have the print delivered for free (though not necessarily immediately) to anyone in Ottawa, Toronto, or Montreal. Those farther afield would be required to reimburse me for the shipping.

Incidentally, if anyone wants a print of any of my photos, they are welcome to contact me. I am sure we could work something out.

The draw will work as follows:

  • The last comment posted before this post goes up will be assigned the number 0.
  • Each subsequent comment will be assigned a number in sequence.
  • The random number generator at random.org will be used to generate a random integer.
  • If that number corresponds to a suitable comment, that person will win.
  • Suitable comments exclude the following: comments posted by me, comments posted by the dot persona, spam comments, and any other comments deemed ineligible for the contest by me.
  • If the number does not correspond to a suitable comment, another number will be drawn. This will continue as long as necessary.

[Update: 15 September 2009] The winner’s print has been mailed.

  1. Well that didn’t work, it was meant to say “Very interesting idea” spread out over three posts.

I still get my three posts in anyway, so I guess it did work at the expense of making me look like a moron.

  2. Matt,

Your second comment got eaten by ye spam filters. But I restore such things pretty quickly, most of the time.

  3. Those wanting to appreciate my spam problems should take note of this: of the 80,786 comments that appeared before this post, only 21,853 were not spam.

  4. I also think this contest is a fbulous idea.

In the likely event that I will not be the lucky winner, can you post your photos on line so that I can fall into the category of

“Incidentally, if anyone wants a print of any of my photos, they are welcome to contact me. I am sure we could work something out.”

  5. I, too, would be interested to know which photos you’ve selected for the show. Is there a theme to the shots or did you just pick the images which appealed most when considered individually?

  6. But of course.

As for the photo selection: they are being chosen to look good together and at a distance. Once it is all finalized, printed, and on the walls, I will post some photos of the exhibition here.

  7. I am thrilled about your show and I love the photos that I have from you already. I am feeling lucky though…

  8. Is there going to be a formal vernissage and/or other sort of release party for opening night at Raw Sugar?

  9. I have considered having an opening party, but am not sure what form it should take, how elaborate it should be, or how many people would show up.

  10. Milan, you must have an opening.

Any decision you make about how elaborate it should be will be fine. (Since Raw Sugar serves refreshments, you don’t even have to provide any.)

You do not need to decide how many people would show up because you can’t control that.

  11. It looks like some kind of opening will happen on Friday, September 4th.

Feel free to spread the word.

  12. I’ll certainly be there :) I love the pictures you took of my daughter at Blog Out Loud.

  13. If you want a full resolution version, just let me know. It could easily be blown up to 12″ by 18″, or bigger.

  14. We’re now up to comment 81,107. That means that any comment posted now has a better than 1 in 321 chance of winning.

The odds are actually rather better, since a lot of the comments were either spam or posts from the dot persona.

  15. The colours really are mean. But you made up for them with your pronunciation guide. If you randomly select my number I will merit the photo with correct pronunciation. I don’t know about that longer second L business, though. That sounds hard.
